"Hello class. I will be your coach from this day on. Since this is one of my free periods. Coach Asher has asked me to lend her a hand with some of the over crowded classes. She has assigned me to your group."
A girl rose her hand. He nodded in her direction in acknowledgment. Her voice a quiet whisper of fear as she asked,
"No offense but what exactly do you know about gymnastics?"
Her question brought slight gasps from the other students. Eligh narrowed his eyes in clear annoyance at the girls discrediting question."
"No offense but I was just about to demonstrate." His remark clearly mocking taking on the attitude of a student and rather unprofessional. He then turned and did something no one could have predicted. An element or single gymnastic move any gymnast can appreciate. Eligh Heron doing a round off triple back handspring was something no one had expected. But it was oh so pleasing to the eyes as his muscles flexed. Even better he totally stuck the landing. Ravens eyes were glued to him as she looked on awestruck. Before anyone could say anything else he broke us up into groups and had us practice some simpler routines. The class began demonstrating they're technique under Elighs watchful eye correcting them on slight errors or drastic errors that could cause major injuries over time. Raven hadn't enjoyed gym class in so long they hardly ever had time for gymnastics since they were usually in much larger groups. But it was a little bit unnerving having Eligh around. Every so often his eyes would stray to hers. His gaze ever watchful. Catching his eyes he stared deep his silver eyes penetrating straight into her soul. She became breathless as his focus was soley on her. She wished to stay in that moment forever but her life was not a fairytale. The bell rang startling her and breaking their momentary connection. Students began rushing back into the locker rooms no doubt sweaty from the extensive exercise. Ravenna really wished she could have a cold shower right about now. With all the sweaty workout and Elighs constant longing stare yet cruel words she needed time to think and cool down. Figuratively as well as literally speaking. As she entered the ladies locker room a girl approached her nervousness clear in her expression.
"Hey its Raven right?"
"Uhh --- Yeah thats right."
"So are you and Eligh like a thing?"
Raven was blown away by such a question. Had she been so obvious in her feelings.
"What -- uhh no- why -- why would you ask such a dumb question."
"Just the rumors going around. Didn't you hear them."
"Well let me correct you and these rumors. No we are not a thing. We were friends once but that was a long time ago we haven't talked since he left."
"Since he left me"
She added in her head. The girl smirked at her a venomous smile curling her face. She wore a mask of friendship well. Raven braced herself for the unseen cruelty fastly approaching. "Of course. I thought as much myself. Why would Eligh Heron waste his time on such a freak like you when their are much more attractive options"
She glanced at Raven like she was a bug she wanted very much to crush. Her eyes were filled with much of the same disgust as the rest of the town. They all think of her has a witch for reasons Raven will never understand. Her strawberry curls bounced as she sashayed away. She looked a bit desperate in her walk. But the eyes still trailed her anyway. Cruel as she was. She was quite beautiful. Ari came out of the dressing room just in time to watch the girl strutting away excitedly.
"What the hell did that slut want from you."
"Wait you know who she is?"
"Of course thats Selene Sparrow what did she want?"
"She asked me if Eligh and I were together."
"Uh uh-h that bitch asked about the wrong topic."
"What do you----"
Ari cut her off furious.
"She asked you that because she's into him. Rave she's trying to clear out the competition." Ravens face went a little red from embarrassment or anger she wasn't sure. But she knew one thing. She had to talk to Eligh. When she was done dressing she exited the locker room heading back into the gymnasium in search of him. She was hungry so grateful it was her lunch hour. Walking to the door after seeing Eligh had clearly left already. She excited stepping out into the warm sunlight closing her eyes she let the warmth sink in.
"Ughh-hmm" Raven jumped startled at the sound of someone clearing they're throat. Looking up in alarm she noticed Eligh leaning against a pillar near the exit arms propped against his chest. His silver eyes zoned in on her and he smiled. It wasn't a smirk or even a half smile. But it was a real full blown teeth showing smile. The kind of smile he used to give her back then. She have him a cautious one of her own in return. He waved her over. As Raven walked towards him her legs grew heavy. As sbe approached him he grabbed her arm leading her farther back into a dark corner hidden in shadows. Ravens stomach suddenly grew wings. Feeling super uneasy and a bit worried. He looked into her eyes searching for that soul deep connection. He drew her into his arms a warm embrace. His voice soft as he whispered against her ear.
"Raven you have no idea how much I've missed you."
Her breath hitched. Shocked. She had not been expecting to hear that. Her shock grew into annoyance suddenly very irritated by his words. "Yeah right." She scoffed at him. "If you had really missed me or even cared a damn for me at all. You would have called or texted fuck you could have wrote letters. Done something to keep in touch. Not just left into the wooded roads with out so much as a glance back at the rest of us you left behind. And had you done that you would know everything I've been through since you left. Had you done that this reunion might be welcome. But you left and never looked back. Left me alone with nothing but heartache. So no I don't think you missed me."
"Oh my Raven I did call. I even wrote when ot became clear you wouldn't answer the phone. I called and wrote every day for 3 years. In fact I called this morning to tell you I was teaching here. I didn't want you freaked out like you got today. Your mother answered the first time I called and told me to go to hell that I was to never call her house again. I visted a couple months after I moved. We were on break. But when I stopped by to see you your mom told me you were staying with their friends. Some unspeakable sin had been committed. I asked her what terrible thing could you have possibly done. She just looked me in the eyes. I rember that sad dead hateful look she gave me when she said it was my fault and slammed the door in my face. Somehow after that everytime I visited she made sure you were somewhere else. Supposedly with those friends she told me about the first time."
Raven could see the emotion in his eyes. The pain as he probably thought her to have been avoiding him. That she never wanted to see him again. At the hurt in his voice the accusation clear. She broke. She cried the tears that had been threatening to leak out for years. Only held back by the anger she could no longer feel. For he was just as broke as she. In just the same hurt.
