Fate of a Raven (A Moon Cursed Book 1)
Fate of a Raven
By R. V. Wanderer
Prologue
Raven never knew why every one saw her differently. So many people looked at her in contempt. She just always tried to understand why. But she was never sorry for being who she was. However her past was a door she kept locked in the deepest and darkest parts of her mind. As if locking away the brutal memories would some how make them untrue and veil them from the rest of the world. But tonight was a full moon and so she'd have this one night to let go. Where she could sit in her circle and take in the illuminating glow and caressing warmth of the moonlight. The moon was the only comfort for her given her despairing circumstances. It was her light throughout her lifetime of darkness. She felt the moon lift her spirits just being outside in its presence. Her adoptive parents could never know of this of course. They did not condone her feelings toward such things. Often she was ridiculed and somewhat shamed for her ideals. But she payed them no mind. They didn't have to believe. Although she hated that they put her beliefs down to lift theirs up. That she could not stand for. Her home was not a home. To her it was an inescapable prison. She felt the weight of her incarceration each day as he was gone. Her dreams of freedom bursting through her spirit as her birthday drew close. She dreamed of being free from her warden of a family. Of moving on to a place where no one knew her and she could breathe easily once more. Yet she didn't even know who she truly was. But more importantly what she was.
Chapter One
Raven never understood them. As she looked at her two friends. Layla and Laurianna. She didn't get why they were so free and able to be themselves. While she felt confined in her body. Her soul trapped underneath the many layers. Raging against the mortal bonds of humanity. As she was not as unobservant as her friends she noticed when guys strode by them there eyes roaming theyre figures with the obvious primal hunger of a teenage boy. Though as observant as she claimed to be she never seemed to see how the guys watched her even the staff of the highschool. Even more frequently than her friends. She wasn't ugly by any means. She was an interesting beauty. Though she never quite believed it herself. Her beauty was a dark one. With long curling hair that she often compared to a lions mane. With its uncontrollable volume. Her eyelashes long curls framing her eyes in dark fanning sweeps. Her eye color varied on her ever changing mood. The technical label was hazel. They're colors ranging from a soft golden brown ringed in green to a startling green with sparks of grey flashing through to a dark almond brown with coal. But there was always a silver shine in her eyes. No matter the color. She's used to peoples vehement stares. They're fear is not uncommon in her life. Never unfound. People go as far as to call her a witch. Or a demoness crafted from sorcery. Raven jolted out of thoughts. Almost falling from the pillar she was leaning against as her friend called out to her. Laylas words were incomprehensible. Grabbing Raven on the shoulder to steady her Layla restated " Raven." Releasing her arm she says. "I've been trying to get you to wake up from your daydreams for the last two minutes. C'mon we're going to be late for class" Layla and Laurianna went off in the direction of they're Homeroom. Which left her running through the walkways and down hallways in a rush to escape tardiness. Focused on getting to class she ran on Autopilot. Being so focused she was completely unaware of the people around. Just expecting there to be none. Just as she put on a burst of speed. She colided into someone. But before could fall landing on her ass. Which surely would have been humiliating . Warmth spread through her as hands pulled her up and into his arms. Tingles rushing her body. Her mind was scrambling to keep up with her bodies reaction. Embarrassed she stepped out of his hold cheeks flushing and a red creeping up her collar. As she looked up into a set of stunning silver eyes. The man's eyes widened in shock. She looked down mumbled an apology. Then took off down the hallway after thoroughly checking that no one was coming into the Hall. In hopes of avoiding another run in. Literally. She set her eyes forward as she dashed away. She approached her class clearly tardy. She went in and accepted the expected scolding from the teacher. People in this town hated anything that was considered unpolite . As she sat through her first lecture of the day, she thought of the man with the luminous silver eyes. She realized something had passed between those eyes. Just before he had composed himself. She knew it couldn't possibly be what she thought. But swore he looked at her as if in recogniztion. Which could not be possible. Though she knew of one with eyes that haunted her. He was long gone and just a boy. A boy who haunted her memories. The guy in the hallway was clearly a man. Though not an old man maybe early or mid 20s. She could never have been attracted to someone so old. Then her thoughts started to Dawn on her. Did she truly believe herself attracted to him? She only spent a moment in his presence. One in which she had literally run through him in her utter idiocy. Somewhere along her thoughts the teachers lecture had drug on and Raven had long since stopped paying attention. So when the bell rang startling her. She almost fell out of her chair. These accidents kept happening. Embarrasment plagued her. Her mind hinting on suspicion at such bad omens for a first day and a start to the year. Gathering her things and shoving the untouched notebook and pencil pouch into her bag. She rushed through the aisle almost tripping on a kid as he reached out his foot to pull a fallen pencil. Stumbling forward. She steadied herself on the closest thing to touch. A living breathing wall of flesh. Blake Carterson. Her eyes met his. Pale green eyes bored into hers disgust twisting his features. Fear flashed just as quick as it retreated. He brushed her hand off with a hiss and made the sign of the cross. Whispering a silent prayer to whatever god his Christian faith believed in. And there it was the first of the year. The first of many yet to come. Raven left the classroom hurriedly. Hoping he couldn't see the tears welling in her eyes. It does nothing for them to see her cry. Only makes it worse. They see her tears as false and as a sign of manipulation. For in their eyes a demon could not cry. To them she would always be just that. A witch. Never just a girl. Never human. Walking to her next class she could hear the whispers following her as well as the eyes tracing her as she trudged down the hallway. As she turned round the corner. Laurianna appeared at her elbow. Matching her brisk pace down the hall. Laurianna looked as if she had something to tell her. Instead of waiting for her to work up the nerve to say it Raven took initiative and asked "What is it now?" She was expecting more of the same usual rumors spread on around school about her. She was not expecting the answer she was about to received. A day that had haunted her thoughts and highlighted in her dreams.
Laurianna practically squealed in excitement.
"Guess who's back?"
She said in a rush of breath.
"No idea"
"Eligh. Rave. Eligh Heron is back."
And thats when her suspicion made sense. The news hit Raven like a ton of bricks instantly dampening her spirit. Oh dear. She had run into Eligh Heron. The last person she had ever expected to see. Not here. Not anywhere. He was supposed to be gone. She had watched him drive off through the wooded roads. Then he'd been gone. No word. It had been like nothing had ever happened as if he'd never existed. Until she literally slammed back into his life. By barreling into him earlier in the morning. She didn't understand. Why would he be at the high school? He'd graduated long before he left. So why ? She would get her answer soon enough. As she walked on to class she pictures that day in her mind. His face retreating back turning on her. As the boy she loved left her. With no thoughts of ever coming back.
